Isolation and Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles of Enterobacteria from Nestling Grey-Breasted Parakeets (Pyrrhura Griseipectus) Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Machado,DN; Lopes,ES; Albuquerque,AH; Horn,RV; Bezerra,WGA; Siqueira,RAS; Lopes,IT; Nunes,FP; Teixeira,RSC; Cardoso,WM.
ABSTRACT The psittacine Pyrrhura griseipectus is a threatened species currently only found in Ceará State, Brazil. A microbiological survey was conducted to determine the composition of the enteric microbiota of this species, as well as the phenotypic profiles of antimicrobial susceptibility presented by the isolates. Cloacal swabs were collected from individual birds and submitted to microbiological processing. Antimicrobial susceptibility profiles were evaluated using the disk diffusion method. Bacteria of the genus Escherichia, Proteus, Citrobacter, Pantoea, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Morganella, Hafnia, Enterobacter, and Serratia were isolated. The most frequently isolated species were Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis and Proteus vulgaris,...

Molecular Diagnosis of Beak and Feather Disease in Native Brazilian Psittacines Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Araújo,AV; Andery,DA; Ferreira Jr.,FC; Ortiz,MC; Marques,MVR; Marin,SY; Vilela,DAR; Resende,JS; Resende,M; Donatti,RV; Martins,NRS.
ABSTRACT The incidence of the psittacine beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) was investigated in Brazilian native parrots with normal feathering arriving at rescue and triage centers for wild animals (CETAS, IBAMA) in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. BFDV DNA was investigated by previously described PCR technique for the partial amplification of BFDV ORF-1 in DNA extracts from blood, cloacal swab or liver of psittacines. Some birds provided more than one sample. Nine species of psittacines were sampled between January 2009 and October 2010. Blood (n=46) or cloacal swab (n=128) samples were obtained from psittacines immediately upon arrival at the triage centers. Liver samples were collected from necropsied birds dead on arrival (n=167). All swab...

Use of collard green stalks as environmental enrichment for cockatiels ( Nymphicus hollandicus ) kept in captivity Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Carvalho,T.S.G.; Saad,C.E.P.; Alvarenga,R.R.; Ferreira,W.M.; Assis,V.D.L.; Pereira,V.M.; Scalon,J.D.; Silva,J.P.; Zangeronimo,M.G..
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of collard green stalks as environmental enrichment on the behavior of cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) maintained in captivity. Sixteen birds were housed individually in cages and fed a commercial diet for parrots and seed mix, with water ad libitum during 12 days in climatic chamber with temperature and relative humidity simulating tropical conditions. The animals (n = 8) were divided into two groups, control and enriched, and the experimental period was divided into two phases (during and after enrichment) of four days each. The collard green stalks were used as enrichment only during the first period of the experiment, daily changed and maintained only during the day. The stalks...

Vertebral chondrosarcoma in a blue-fronted parrot (Amazona aestiva) Ciência Rural
Blume,Guilherme Reis; Oliveira,Ayisa Rodrigues de; Mattioli,Mariana Portugal; Oliveira,Letícia Batelli de; Reis Junior,Janildo Ludolf; Sant'Ana,Fabiano José Ferreira de.
Chondrosarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal tumor in which the neoplastic cells produce cartilaginous matrix and is uncommonly described in birds. This report describes the clinical and pathological findings of one case of chondrosarcoma in a blue-fronted parrot (Amazona aestiva). Macroscopically a 3.6x3.5x1.8cm, nodular, ulcerated, and firm mass was identified in the dorsal synsacrum. Microscopically, the mass was composed of a monomorphic proliferation of pleomorphic spindle chondrocytes with abundant cartilaginous matrix, consistent with chondrosarcoma
